"...those who repent and correct themselves and make evident [what they concealed]. those - I will accept their repentance, and I am the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful."

[Qur'an: Surah Al-Baqarah (the Cow) 2, verse 160]

Tauba/tawba means to return, to return back to Allah SWT after sinful, evil actions and to abstain from them in the future. A Muslim should repent for anything that is forbidden in Islam, e.g, lying, backbiting, slandering etc. Also anything that is displeasing to Allah, and by repenting and avoiding them in future.

"...if you repent, that is best for you; but if you turn away - then know that you will not cause failure to Allah..."

[Qur'an; surah At-Tawba (The Repentance) 9, verse 3]

Know that Allah SWT is the all-Forgiving, the Merciful, but He also has limits and limits His Forgiveness to whom He pleases.

"But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says, 'Indeed, I have repented now,' or those who die while they are disbelievers. For them We have prepared a painful punishment."

[Qur'an: Surah An-Nisa (The Women) 4, verse 18]

For those out there that continue to do sin after sin and each time they repent, know that Allah SWT is Forgiving, but if you do sin after sin after sin and do not repent, then know Allah has prepared a painful punishment.

Then those who do a sinful act and repent sincerely, ashamed and with hope in Allah. Knowing that they sincerely will not be committing such a sin again, by feeling ashamed and fearful of Allah. Then they will be the believers who will get a great reward, in Shaa Allah (If Allah Wills).

"Except for those who repent, correct themselves, hold fast to Allah, and are sincere in their religion for Allah, for those will be the believers. And Allah is going to give the believers a great reward."

[Qur'an: Surah An-Nisa (The Women) 4, verse 146]

"Except  for those who repent thereafter and reform, for indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

[Qur'an: Surah An-Nur (The Light) 24, verse 5]

Even Prophet Muhammad SAWS, who was the most sinless person used to seek Allah's forgiveness over 70 times a day.

The companion, Abu Hurairah r.a. said:

I heard Rasulullah s.a.w. say, "I swear by Allah that I seek Allah's Pardon and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day."

(Sahih Al-Bukhari)

"Those [angels] who carry the Throne and those around it exalt [Allah] with praise of their Lord and believe in Him and ask for forgiveness for those who have believed, [saying], 'Our Lord, You have encompassed all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who have repented and followed Your way and protect them from the punishment of Hellfire.'"

[Qur'an: Surah Ghafir (The Forgiver) 40, verse 7]

If you are looking to please Allah and gain His love, then this verse is for you....

"Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves."

[Qur'an: Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) 2, verse 222]

Beware of becoming like these types of people, may Allah continue to guide and strengthen our faith and keep us on the straight path, Ameen....

"Indeed, those who reject the message after their belief and then increase in disbelief - never will their [claimed] repentance be accepted, and they are the ones astray."

[Qur'an: Surah Ali Imran (The Family Of Imran) 3, verse 90]

"The repentance accepted by Allah is only for those who do wrong in ignorance [or carelessness] and then repent soon after. It is those to whom Allah will turn in forgiveness, and Allah is ever Knowing and Wise."

[Qur'an: Surah An-Nisa (The Women) 4, verse 17]
