Minor Sins

BEWARE of committing continuous minor sins, they can accumulate into major sins if not stopped. The goal is to avoid all sins as best we can and to sincerely repent and reform.

Backbiting (Gheebah):

"Would one of you like to eat the flesh of hims brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah."

[Qur'an: Surah Al-Hujurat (The Dwelling) 49, verse 12]

 

Lying (Kadhib):

"In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] use to lie."

[Qur'an: Surah Al-Baqarah (The Cow) 2, verse 10]

 

Negligence in Prayer:

"So woe to those who pray [But] who are heedless of their prayers-those who [want but] to be seen [by men]."

[Qur'an: Surah Al-Ma'un (Small Kindness) 107, verses 4-6]

 

Wasting time:

Mu'ath bin Jabal (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) said, "A person will not move on (on the Day of judgement) until he has been asked about four things: his life and in how he spent it; his knowledge and what he did with it; his wealth, from where he acquired it and on what he spent it; and his body and how he wore it out."

[Sahih Hadith]

 

Breaking promises:

'Abdulla ibn 'Amr (May Allah Be Pleased With Him) narrated that the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) said:

"There are four [characteristics], whoever has them is a hypocrite, and whoever has one of the four characteristics of hypocrisy unless he gives it up: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; when he makes a pledge, he betrays it; and when he disputes he resorts to foul language."

[Al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim]

 

Excessive talking about things that do not concern us:

"All speech of Adams sons are counted against them except enjoining good, forbidding evil or remembering Allah, the All Mighty"

[Tirmidhi]

 

Having too much curiosity in other peoples affairs:

"Part of a persons being a good Muslim is leaving alone that which does not concern him."

[Tirmidhi]

 

Being envious (Hasad):

Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet (PBUH), said, "Beware of envy, for it devours good deed just as fire devours wood or grass."

[Abu Dawud]

 

Neglecting family obligations:

"Beware. Every one of you is a shepherd and every one is answerable with regard to his flock. The Caliph is a shepherd over the people and shall be questioned about his subjects (as to how he conducted their affairs). A man is a guardian over the members of his family and shall be questioned about them (as to how he looked after their physical and moral well-being). A woman is a guardian over the household of her husband and his children and shall be questioned about them (as to how she managed the household and brought up the children)."

[Sahih Muslim]

 

Overeating & Gluttony:

"The son of Adam cannot fill a vessel worse than his stomch, as it is enough for him to take a few bites to straighten his back. If he cannot do it, then he may fill it with a third of his food, a third of his drink and a third for his breath."

[Tirmidhi]

 

Neglecting personal hygiene:

 

Being negligent with wealth:

"And give the relatives his right, and [also] the poor and the traveller, and do not spend wastefully."

[Qur'an: Surah Al-Isra (The Night Journey) 17, verse 26]

 

Being proud and boastful:

"And do not turn your cheek [ in contempt] towards people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful."

[Qur'an: Surah Luqman 31, verse 18]

 

Arrogance (Takabbur):

"Assuredly, Allah knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, H does not like the arrogant."

[Qur'an: Surah An-Nahl (The Bees) 16, verse 23]

 

Ridiculing people:

"O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them."

[Qur'an: Surah Al-Hujurat (The Dwelling) 49, verse 11]

 

Calling each other offensive nicknames:

"And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not reonet - then it is those who are the wrongdoers."

[Quran: Surah Al-Hujurat (The Dwellings) 49, verse 11]

 

Being rude to elders and harsh to young children:

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah PBUH, said, "Whoever does not show mercy to our young ones, or acknowledge the rights of our elders, is not one of us."

[Musnad Ahmad]

 

Having bad thoughts and much suspicions about others:

"O you who believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin."

[Qur'an: Surah Al-Hujurat (The Dwelling) 49, verse 12]

 

Not lowering your gaze at forbidden things:

"Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them, Allah is well Acquainted with what they do. And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not to expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their head-covers over their chests and not to expose their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands fathers, their sons, their husbands sons, their brothers, their brothers sons, their sisters sons, their women, that which their right hand possess, or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed."
